I read this book without having read the six preceding it in the series featuring veterinarian Rachel Goddard. Now I'm looking forward to learning more about this author's strong characters and their histories within their small Virginia community.
Poisoned Ground is a rich collection of events and consequences of a local citizenry torn apart by the threats/promises of a development company determined to turn their small town into a luxury resort. In her quest to uncover the true culprits and solve three murders, Rachel finds herself in trouble with longtime friends and even her husband, who just happens to also be the local sheriff.
Having spent a good deal of time in the area that Parshall writes about, I believe she's done a fine job of capturing the attributes of the locale, though I would like to have seen at least a character or two with that wonderful Virginia drawl. But the story is an entertaining read that most likely will leave you, like me, wanting more.
